1st Award Rules and Judging Guidelines

Prizes

  • One “Best Children's Picture Book Award”, which the winner will be awarded a Cash Prize of USD 20,000 and a Feng Zikai Chinese Children's Picture Book Award Emblem and Trophy. If the writing and the illustration are not produced by the same person, the Cash Prize shall be split equally between the writer and illustrator.
  • One “Judging Panel's Recommended Illustration Award” and one “Judging Panel's Recommended Writing Award” (Presentation of these two awards or not depends on quality of the entries for the year), where the winners will be each awarded a Cash Prize of USD 10,000 and a Feng Zikai Chinese Children's Picture Book Award Emblem and Trophy.
  • Ten “Outstanding Children's Picture Book Award” (exact number of awards depends on the quality of the entries for the year), where the winners will each be awarded a Cash Prize of USD 1,000 and a Feng Zikai Chinese Children's Picture Book Award Emblem and Trophy.
  • The Organizer shall purchase 3,000 copies of the book winning the Best Award, which will be given out to schools for educational and reading promotion purposes.
  • The Organizer may publish a book introducing the 50 final entry works for promotional purposes.

Rules and regulations

  •  Entry must be Chinese children's picture book published between January 2004 and December 2008.
  •  Entry must be an original creation written in the Chinese language.
  • Although the theme and genre of entries are unrestricted, the content and format shall be suitable for children aged 3 to 12.
  • Entries cannot be plagiarized works or infringements of copyrights of any third parties. Once proven, such work shall be disqualified and the award (if any) shall be rescinded. Entrants bear all legal responsibilities, and indemnify the award organizers against loss & damage of submitted manuscripts.
  • The organizer possesses the right to use the content of any entries for the purposes of promoting the Award.

Judging Criteria

  • Content and format should be suitable for children aged 3 to 12.
  • Content should be interesting and creative, with knowledge conveyed in an accurate and straight-forward manner. Illustrations in picture books containing knowledge must be accurate and clear.
  • Drawing techniques should be sophisticated in order to enhance the overall visual aesthetic effect.
  • Illustrations should be appropriate interpretations of the theme, plot, concept, characters, settings and atmosphere, and should reflect the writing.
  • The overall presentation of the book – including details like font, layout design, printing and binding – will also be judged and therefore should be taken into consideration.
  • Entries should encourage creativity and innovation as well as inspire ideas in readers.
