The 7th Picture Book Award Winning Books

Synopsis

"Happy Birthday" is a family love and caring story using an omniscient perspective to descript a family rushing home separately in a day. From the map on the title page, the book is using a vertical folding approach to show the walking route on the map. Reading can trace the characters' footsteps to walk around the streets. In between, the interaction among the neighbours makes the readers experience the humanity of neightbourhood.

In terms of the layout design, the time and space of the two storylines are separated by picture frames, so that the two lines have their own development. It is followed by a vertical spread where the relevant characters are ably arranged on the same street scene. The split pictures and page spreads are applied alternately and regularly, and become the main feature of this book's layout. It not only helps to develop two separated storylines, but also pave a way for an unexpected ending which make fun to the readers. Instead of saying that the story of“The way Home”, “misled” the reader, it is better that the author created another interesting storyline to strengthen the sense of care among the family members without distinguishing you and me.
