Cai is a painter and a picture book creator. Her representative works include The Double-Sixth Festival, The Boy Who Outfoxed a Fox (named Bao'er in the Traditional Chinese version), Birds-feathered Clothing, The Story of the Peach-Blossom Spring, Lady Meng Jiang, and alike. The Boy Who Outfoxed a Fox won the Golden Apple Award in the 14th Biennial of Illustrations, Bratislava. In 2000, she was selected as a judge for Bologna Children's Book Fair.
